Introduction to Lighting Basics in the TecZone

Posted on: 21st June 2017

On Tuesday 24th and Wednesday 25th of May our very own lighting specialist Andy Friedli took over the TecZone to lead our training course an "Introduction to Lighting Basics". Mandy Bullock-Williams from Zero 88 / Eaton supported Andy on both days, bringing her years' of experience to the event and offering a much appreciated helping hand.

"Introduction to Lighting Basics" is a Leisuretec training course aimed at installers, rental companies and our customer who want to learn more about lighting and potentially grow their lighting business. The TecZone provides a relaxed environment for people to learn, ask questions and also get some vital hands on experience with some professional equipment. Some of the equipment used on the day was kindly supported by ETC, who provided ColorSource and SourceFour fixtures, CHAUVET who provided some SlimPAR fixtures, Martin Professional with their RUSH Moving Heads, LDR with their Fresnel and spot lighting fixtures, Zero 88 who provided the control and dimming and Doughty who provided the clamps, stands and accessories for the event.

Why do our customers want to learn more about lighting? We have various customers who get asked about lighting systems and end up having to either turn the project down, or get a massive headache trying to do a project they know little about. Leisuretec's own "Introduction to Lighting Basics" TecZone course has been designed to overcome these problems so when our customers are asked to design a lighting system, the answer is always yes. On the day, attendees learnt about a huge variety of topics right from clamping a fixture to truss, which lights to use in which applications right through to programming a DMX control desk to control their fixtures.

To maximise the attendee’s learning experience, the team was split into two groups each with an abundance of lighting equipment to use throughout the day. In the morning both teams learnt the basic concepts of lighting rigs, which fixtures are suitable for which applications, how to control light spill using a variety of accessories and how to assemble a basic lighting systems involving a dimmer, lighting desk, cable and of course… a light!

After learning the very basics, the afternoon progressed and got a bit more technical. Andy continued to go into more depth on stage lighting which saw the two group’s team back up to light a stage of their own. Following a client’s brief, the team incorporated flood lights and uplighters to create a warm ambience, while focusing a spot light on centre stage directly where the presenter would be positioned. This was an excellent opportunity for the attendees to experiment with the fixtures and accessories while putting their newly learnt knowledge to the test.

We'd like to thank everyone who attended the course, we hope you enjoyed the day, enjoyed the food and most important of all learnt something!

All of our TecZone training courses are completely free of charge, with drinks and snacks provided throughout the day alongside hot fresh food at lunch time. If you'd like to learn more about lighting please book your place here on our TecZone page.
