Lighting Basics for Beginners returns to the TecZone

Posted on: 6th October 2017

Following two successful days in June our TecZone event Lighting Basics is BACK! Also back by popular demand, our very own lighting specialist Mr Friedli led the course alongside Mandy Bullock-Williams from Zero 88 / Eaton.

"Introduction to Lighting Basics" is a Leisuretec training course aimed at installers, rental companies and our customers who want to learn more about lighting and grow their lighting business. The TecZone provides a relaxed environment for people to learn, ask questions and also get some vital hands on experience with professional equipment. ETC, CHAUVET, Martin Pro, Zero 88, City Theatrical and Doughty supported the training by providing the equipment used throughout the day.

To give everyone some basic need-to-know lighting knowledge, Andy kicked the day off by discussing different lighting types, where to or not to use them and different methods of control. Shortly after, the group was split into two teams to ensure everyone had maximum opportunity to get hands on with the equipment. As well as differentiating the fixtures, Andy also spent some time on the positioning of lighting and how effective or non-effective lights can be depending on the set up.

By the afternoon the teams had already learnt about a huge variety of topics right from clamping a fixture to truss through to programming a DMX control desk, so now it was time to get a little bit more technical. The attendees were set the task of lighting a stage while following a client’s brief, which they swiftly began creating a plan for. Dividing the stage into sections enabled the teams to focus on what equipment was needed for specific areas while considering special requirements such as colour mixing and fixture accessories. The team went on to incorporate floods, uplighters and spotlights to fulfil their client brief.

We have various customers who get asked about lighting systems and end up having to either turn the project down, or get a massive headache trying to do a project they know little about. Leisuretec's own "Introduction to Lighting Basics" TecZone course has been designed to overcome these problems so when our customers are asked to design a lighting system, the answer is always yes. “The course was great, I learnt so much in that one day.” Added one attendee “You weren’t just thrown in at the deep end either; each section we covered had a technical explanation and training before we set to practical. Andy was always there prompting us with questions like 'Are you sure you want to wire that up that way'? That of course makes you think and explore an obvious mistake, which has got to be the best way to learn.”

All of our TecZone training courses are completely free of charge, with drinks and snacks provided throughout the day alongside hot fresh food at lunch time. Learn more about lighting, book your place on our TecZone page today!
