Audio-Technica at MotoGP: The BP28 Large-Diaphragm Condenser Shotgun Microphone

Following on from the recent introduction to Audio-Technica’s long-standing involvement with Moto GP broadcast audio, this exclusive behind-the-scenes video focuses on the unique talents of their BP28 Large-Diaphragm Condenser Shotgun model.
Capturing the snarl of Moto GP bikes as they arc around the corners of a circuit is key to immersing viewers in the action. As Pep Mendoza, Sports Sound Manager from Dorna Sport SL (the commercial rights holder of MotoGP™) explains, this is the “flash zone”, where the microphones are the closest to the track.
As such, the demands on the mics are enormous – they need to handle extreme SPLs (sound pressure levels) without distorting and deliver a low end response that conveys the visceral excitement of the race. The BP28’s large diaphragm and rugged construction makes it the ideal choice for Pep and his team for this location on the circuit, as he shows here.
