Leisuretec Educate the Industry's Future Bright Sparks

At Leisuretec we’re no stranger to hosting events, however back in May we decided to try out something a little different and offer our own course “Lighting Basics for Beginners” to a group of home educated children aged 12-14. As usual, our lighting specialist Andy Friedli presented the course along with the help of Mandy Bullock-Williams from Zero 88.
The content for the junior workshop followed the exact itinerary that we offer to our trade customers including an introduction to moving lights, DMX channel allocation, which lights work best for specific applications plus an in-depth explanation of Tungsten and LED lighting. Chauvet Professional, Zero 88 and Martin were just some of the brands available that the children were able to get their hands on which offered a fantastic opportunity to work with premium products that they may not have otherwise had until starting College. The group spent the morning differentiating fixtures and learning the importance of positioning luminaires in order to achieve maximum effect; by the afternoon the children had mastered how to clamp fixtures to truss, how to program a lighting desk and they even illuminated an entire stage with floods, uplighters and spotlights.
At the end of the day we asked the children to complete a short feedback form which found that after attending the workshop, 80% of them were inspired to work within the lighting industry in the future and 100% of them would like to attend more workshops related to audio and special effects. Following the success of the day, we are eager to offer more workshops to the younger generation to help them gain new skills and experience wherever possible and who knows… we could be educating the finest techies of our industry’s future!
